Aircraft Data
For everyone who works in the aviation field or more likely for who is interested on those beautiful flying machines, it is great importance that they can recognize them and that they have a minimum understanding of their performance, maybe might be helpful in your job or only explain to your girlfriend or friends when you see those aircrafts.
Since I was a child, I always look at each aircraft that was flying over me on in the vicinities, I always had a natural desire to know more about them, and aircraft recognition is the "art" of being able to recognize aircraft at a distance even if only some of its features can be seen.
I hope you will enjoy this sections that will be done with the help of a great instructor and ex-ATCO that I had, I will follow his booklet and you can follow him on his website: www.avipro.ch
The aircraft pictures are coming from www.airliners.net and most of the data information is take from the following link: Eurocontrol Aircraft Performance Database
You are going to find this section divided into different AIRCRAFT FAMILIES, here the list:
It's also very important that before you have a look at the different sections, you will understand the AIRCRAFT TYPE DESIGNATOR (ICAO Doc.8643) that was introduced by ICAO, this designator is a four or three letters code that will identify the aircraft. Another important category to reming is the WAKE TURBULENCE CATEGORY that is split into three official categories but we can also count it five in Switzerland:
J (Super) - Airbus A380-800
H (Heavy) - 136'000 kg or more, except Airbus 380-800
M (Medium) - more than 40'000 kg and less than 136'000 kg
S (Small) - more than 7'000 kg up to 40'000 kg
L (Light) - 7'000 kg or less
(Small category is used in Switzerland only and Super been introduced in the last few years)
