SKYGUIDE SELECTION
The spirit of selection of Skyguide is radically different from those of the various contests organized for example by ATC in Italy and in France the Civil Aviation Authority. The difference between the selection and competition is significant.
During a competition, the assessment used to establish a ranking of all candidates after they are admitted according to their position in the list and the number of places available. Instead the selection, allows you to determine the level and aptitude of a candidate and then to place it in relation to the level obtained.
In fact, when you apply for Skyguide, you're not competing with others, but at their level.
Selection for Francophone takes place in Skyguide at Geneva airport. For the Germans, will be held in Duebenford near Zurich. I'm from Ticino and have been sent to Duebendorf because of the proximity of the Ticino (3 hours by train from Lugano). The selections are made divided of 4 stages, plus a day for operational visit. Once selected you will still be required to pass a medical examination in Zurich.
The four phases of the selections are named "aptitude tests X" or EAX. Once you receive the email from Skyguide, this nomeclatura will be used. These four stages are preliminary. The day's workshop has no rating, but allows you to see the craft up close.
The progression of the selection is the following:
Aptitude test 1: General test and evaluation of psycho English
Aptitude test 2: Test psychotechniques specific air traffic control
Day's workshop
Aptitude Test 3: test group and individual interview
Aptitude test 4: English test and interview closure
You can access the details of each stage by clicking on the link above, you will also find practical details if you click here
You have to know that every year, there are three courses. Of the approximately 500 people who start the selection of candidates, only one-tenth fails to pass the test of skills and can start the training of air traffic controller at the training center that manages Skyguide in Duebendorf. The candidates have all of the different paths, their ages range from 19 to 29 years or so and come from different countries (Switzerland, France, Germany, Austria, ect.). But they all have one thing in common: a passion for aviation! Students who complete the training receive a license valid throughout Europe. Starting from the month of April 2010, are also holders of a diploma of air traffic controller SS (High School), recognized by the Swiss Confederation.
But who has the characteristics needed to become a controller? Characteristics are very concrete ones necessary for carrying out this demanding profession which implies great responsibility: a good space capacity, high resistance to stress, a faculty pronounced perform multiple tasks at the same time, the powers of deduction, the ability to work in a team and the gift of communication. Candidates must possess among other things obviously have a good knowledge of the English language.
